Common Questions

At Restored Hope, Inc., we understand you may have questions about counseling, how it works, and whether it’s the right choice for you. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

  • What is a Pastoral Counselor?
A pastoral counselor combines the wisdom of the Bible with validated psychological principles to offer guidance and support. Starting with the solid foundation of Biblical principles, a pastoral counselor integrates Christian psychology to address a variety of issues. You don’t have to be a Christian to benefit from the insight pastoral counseling provides. While I won’t seek to convert you, I am happy to offer spiritual guidance if requested.
  • Is Counseling Right for Me?
Counseling is a personal choice, often sought for reasons such as: Managing anxiety, depression, or life transitions. Resolving relationship or family challenges. Seeking personal growth or self-awareness. Counseling is for anyone ready to take responsibility for their life, create self-awareness, and work toward positive change.
  • Do I Really Need Counseling? Can’t I Handle Problems on My Own?
Everyone faces challenges, and while you may have overcome difficulties in the past, seeking support when needed is a sign of strength. Counseling offers tools and strategies to help you: Navigate life’s challenges effectively. Avoid triggers and break negative patterns. Commit to positive, lasting change.
  • How Can Counseling Help Me?
The benefits of counseling include: A deeper understanding of yourself, your goals, and your values. Improved relationships through better communication and conflict resolution. Tools to cope with stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges. Strategies to build self-esteem and self-confidence. Guidance for overcoming trust violations (such as infidelity and pornography) or recovering from trauma.
  • What is Counseling Like?
Counseling is tailored to your individual goals and concerns. Each session typically lasts around 55 minutes, with weekly appointments common. Counseling may involve short-term solutions for specific issues or long-term support for complex challenges. Between sessions, you may be asked to: Read relevant materials. Track behaviors or emotions. Practice strategies and tools that are discussed during your session. Successful counseling requires active participation both during and between sessions. Expect compassion, respect, and actionable guidance throughout the process.
  • Is Medication a Substitute for Counseling?
While medication can alleviate symptoms, it doesn’t always address the underlying causes of distress. Counseling works to uncover and resolve these issues, fostering long-term growth and emotional well-being. For some, a combination of therapy and medication may be the best approach. Consult with your doctor to determine what works best for you.
  • Do You Accept Insurance?
Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance at this time.
  • Is Pastoral Counseling Confidential?
Yes, your privacy is protected by law. Information shared during counseling sessions is confidential unless: There is suspected abuse of a child, dependent adult, or elder. A client threatens harm to another person, requiring police notification. A client poses a serious risk of self-harm, requiring intervention to ensure safety. Your trust is paramount, and confidentiality is maintained within these legal boundaries.
